The History of the Twelve Days of Christmas

The Twelve Days of Christmas refers to the period between Christmas Day (25th December) and Epiphany (6th January) also known as Three Kings Day, which celebrates the arrival of the Three Wise Men. These days have long been associated with feasting, gift-giving, and celebrations, with each day having its own significance in Christian tradition.

As for the song itself, the Twelve Days of Christmas is believed to date back to 18th-century England, first appearing in the children's book Mirth With-out Mischief in 1780. Its origins are somewhat mysterious, and it’s often thought to have been a memory game for children, with each verse building upon the last, challenging singers to recall the increasingly long list of gifts. Interestingly, the original lyrics included “a pretty peacock in a pear tree” instead of the now-familiar partridge, and “four colly birds,” with “colly” being old English slang for blackbirds. These lyrics were later changed by British composer Frederic Austin in 1909 to the version we know today.

Despite its quirky collection of gifts, the song has become a staple Christmas carol over the centuries, even if most of us still don’t know whether it’s ten drummers drumming or twelve… we’ve usually lost the plot by then.
