Up At The O2 With My 9 Year Old Son!

London is packed with unique experiences, but few compare to scaling one of its most recognisable landmarks. Up at The O2 offers an urban mountaineering adventure that combines adrenaline, unbeatable views, and a fresh perspective on the city. I recently took on this challenge with my nine-year-old son, and it was an experience we won’t forget in a hurry!

A Sky-High Arrival: The IFS Cable Car Experience

Before we even set foot on The O2, we decided to build up the excitement with a ride on the IFS Cloud Cable Car. Gliding high above the River Thames, we had the perfect bird’s-eye view of our upcoming climb. From up there, The O2 looked like a futuristic dome dropped into the city skyline, surrounded by Canary Wharf’s gleaming skyscrapers and the winding Thames below. It was the perfect way to set the scene for our adventure.

First Impressions: Standing Beneath The O2

Once on solid ground, we stood at the base of the iconic white dome, gazing up at the rooftop walkway stretching over it. The excitement was kicking in—especially for my son, who was eager to get going. The sheer size of The O2 from ground level is incredible, and it’s only when you’re standing right beneath it that you truly appreciate the scale of the climb ahead.

The Ascent: Gearing Up and Climbing Skyward

After checking in, we got kitted out with our safety harnesses and climbing gear, listening to a quick but reassuring safety briefing from our guide. The climb itself started with a fairly steep incline, and while the bouncy surface of the walkway made it feel a little like walking on a trampoline, it was easy to find our footing.

The incline levels out at certain points, giving you a chance to pause and take in the cityscape unfolding beneath you.

The Summit: Breathtaking Views of London

Reaching the highest point at 52 metres, we were greeted by 360-degree views of London. The sights were nothing short of spectacular—Canary Wharf, the Shard, the Olympic Park, the Thames Barrier, and even Wembley Stadium in the distance.

Seeing London from this height, with no walls or windows between us and the view, was a moment to treasure. We spent time pointing out famous landmarks and soaking in the surreal feeling of standing on top of The O2.

The Descent: One Last Adrenaline Rush

After plenty of photos and taking in the views, it was time to head back down. The descent was just as fun, with a steeper section towards the end adding a bit more of an adrenaline rush. My son loved this part as it was completely different to the climb up.

Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely! Up at The O2 is a fantastic experience for families, thrill-seekers, and anyone looking for a new way to see London. It’s challenging enough to feel like an adventure but safe and structured so that even kids can take part (minimum age is 8).

If you’re looking for a London experience that’s out of the ordinary, I can’t recommend it enough.
