A classic British tradition dating back almost 200 years, Afternoon Tea is one of the UK’s most popular experience day gifts.
Average monthly searches for ‘afternoon tea’ in Google top 135,000 a month in the UK, with the most popular afternoon tea locations searched for including The Ritz, Fortum and Mason, the Savoy, The Shard and Claridges.

Abi Sadler, partnerships manager for WonderDays, said she learned more new things about afternoon tea than expected from the finished infographic.
“Afternoon tea is a British institution and is one of our most popular experiences by far,” she said.
“Pulling together all the data we could find on Afternoon Tea definitely brought some surprises for our team, such as one in 10 Brits drinking at least six cups of tea a day.
“Finding out 80% of the caffeine in tea is released during the first 30 seconds of pouring on the water was also something we didn’t know, although caffeine is an essential part of our diets across the WonderDays team.
“Afternoon Tea Week is the perfect excuse to host your own afternoon tea party, have a go and making your own homemade scones or enjoy someone else doing the cooking by enjoying afternoon tea out.
“There is so much choice for afternoon tea these days, from enjoying it with a glass of fizz on a red London Bus to Mediterranean twists with Italian-style afternoon teas.”

Facts about Afternoon Tea
- The traditional afternoon tea as we know it has its origins in the 1840s, when Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford, complained of getting that "sinking feeling" in the late afternoon before it was time for dinner.
- Cream tea and high tea are both different to afternoon tea.
- Cream tea traditionally consists of scones with jam and cream and a pot of tea
- Traditional high tea is a heavy and filling meal of meat or fish, baked good and vegetables served around 5pm in working class households.
