If you like your helicopter flights to come with a good amount of history and interest, as well as stunning views, this Thames & Medway helicopter flight experience is sure to please.
It's a private flight, so you won't be sharing with strangers, in a Robinson R44 helicopter and is for a group of up to 3 passengers, with everyone getting a window seat to enjoy the wonderful views.
Your helicopter flight begins at Redhill Aerodrome in Surrey, where you'll follow the edge of the North Downs bordering South East London and enjoy glimpses of the London skyline as you fly high above the M25 traffic.
As you turn north, you'll fly past the historic World War 2 airfield of Biggin Hill on towards the impressive QE2 Bridge. From here you'll turn east past a landscape of container ships, jetty's and factories that surround the Dartford crossing and the river bank up to City Airport and the Thames Barrier.
Continuing east along the river, you'll pass Tilbury Docks and the Coalhouse and Cliffe Forts that face each other across the river. The ruins of Hadleigh Castle stand on the northern bank of the river past Canvey Island and you'll spot Southend Pier on Southend beach, the longest pleasure pier in the world at 1.34 miles.
From here, your flight crosses the river passing close to the wreck of the SS Montgomery, a World War 2 ammunition ship, sunk in the estuary with several thousand tons of explosives aboard, her masts still visible above the water. Crossing to the Kent side of the Thames takes you past Sheerness and up the Medway River towards the historic Royal Chatham Dockyard, still home to numerous ex Royal Navy Warships and Submarines.
You'll enjoy seeing the city of Rochester from the air with incredible views of both Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral. Keep your eyes peeled for the 2000 ton Russian Black Widow Submarine moored in the Medway near Strood.
As you leave Rochester to fly back to Redhill Aerodrome, you'll pass Knole House, one of the UK's biggest manor houses, and Brands Hatch race track.
