Take an extraordinary tour through the heart of film history at what has been dubbed "the most popular filming location in the world" by Empire magazine. This journey transports you through nearly a century of cinematic excellence, where many unforgettable movie scenes have been filmed amidst the scenic riverside and the majestic Painted Hall. Expert guides will delve into the filmmaking process, unveiling secrets and recounting anecdotes that highlight the artistry behind the scenes.
The Old Royal Naval College serves as a prime filming location for countless significant scenes in renowned film and TV productions, including hits like The Crown, Les Misérables, Napoleon, and Bridgerton. As you explore, you'll be surrounded by the serene riverside environment and the monumental designs of Sir Christopher Wren. The site's rich history is displayed across vast grounds and buildings, echoing the lives of historic figures such as Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Vice-Admiral Lord Nelson.
Enrich your visit by exploring the renowned Painted Hall, often referred to as 'Britain’s Sistine Chapel', created by Sir James Thornhill. This space, along with the adjacent Chapel of St Peter and Paul, offers a grand display of Baroque art with extensive painted surfaces. In the Nelson Room, marvel at the architectural preservation featuring a striking roof lantern and elegant marble floors chosen by Wren.
The historical narrative continues with a 'Pepper’s Ghost' display showcasing Nelson’s lying-in-state and a poignant bronze sculpture, Breaking the Line by Antony Dufort, commemorating the valorous sailors from the Battle of Trafalgar.
The average visit time is 2 hours.
