A visit to the Brighton Pavilion is one you won’t forget, and it makes a brilliant day out for anyone who loves history, art, architecture, or just a touch of royal drama.
The Royal Pavilion is like stepping into a fairytale. Originally built as a seaside retreat for King George IV, this exotic palace by the sea is a jaw-dropping blend of Indian and Chinese-inspired design. With its onion domes and opulent interiors, it’s not what you’d expect to find in the heart of Brighton, and that’s exactly what makes it so special.
Inside, the Pavilion is a riot of Regency glamour. The Banqueting Room is packed with glistening chandeliers, golden dragons and bold colours, perfect for anyone who loves a bit of wow factor. The Music Room, with its rich red decor and shimmering walls, is equally breathtaking.
But it’s not just about beauty, the Pavilion has a fascinating story to tell. After King George IV died in 1830, it was taken over by his brother, William IV, and later by Queen Victoria. She wasn’t a fan of the bustling Brighton crowds, though, and sold the Pavilion to the town in 1850 for £50,000, a small fortune back then! During World War I, it was even used as a hospital for Indian soldiers.
Today, the Pavilion is one of Brighton’s best-loved landmarks. It’s a brilliant gift for someone who enjoys exploring somewhere with a rich history and plenty to discover. Whether you’re treating a loved one or planning a family day out, it’s a chance to step back in time, soak up the culture, and maybe even pop to the nearby beach or shops afterwards.
The Regency palace of the Royal Pavilion opens a vibrant new immersive experience that invites you to explore the history, magic and meaning of colour. It runs until the 19th October 2025.
