Delve into a pivotal chapter of history at the Churchill War Rooms, an integral part of the Imperial War Museums. This historic site, nestled beneath London's bustling streets, served as the secure headquarters for Sir Winston Churchill and his cabinet during the tumultuous years of the Second World War. As you wander through the preserved bunker system, you're transported to a time when these rooms buzzed with plans and strategies that shaped the course of world events.
Constructed beneath the Treasury building in Westminster's Whitehall just days before the outbreak of war in 1939, the War Rooms were a vital center of operations. Here, you can experience the environment where tireless staff worked relentlessly against the backdrop of a Europe engulfed by conflict. The Cabinet Room, the heart of the complex, offers a tangible connection to the past, where Churchill’s leadership faced its sternest tests. Look closely to spot the scratches on Churchill's chair—a silent testament to the intense pressure and long hours spent in strategic discussions.
Further explore the authenticity of the era in the Map Room, preserved exactly as it was when the war ended in 1945. The walls here tell a story of strategic warfare, dotted with pinholes from map pins that traced the movements of Allied forces across the globe. Another highlight is the top-secret Transatlantic Telephone Room, a covert installation that facilitated direct communication between Churchill and the U.S. President.

Who Can Go
- Adult: 16+
- Child: Ages 5 to 15
- Children under 16 years need to be accompanied by an adult 18+ years.
- A multilingual audio guide is included with your entrance ticket. Visitors under 12 years old are offered a Family audio guide. Descriptive guides are available for visitors with visual impairment.
- Documentation showing proof of disability is required for a Disabled Visitor ticket (and accompanying Adult Carer ticket).
- Churchill War Rooms is wheelchair accessible throughout. However, please note the narrowest corridor is 68cm, and the tightest corner is 90 degrees.
What about Insurance?
The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
