The Main Event

Step aboard the Cutty Sark and step back in time to the age of sail on one of the most celebrated survivors of the maritime world. This legendary vessel, the last of the tea clippers and renowned for her speed and beauty, offers a vivid slice of nautical history. Explore above and below deck as you embark on a self-guided journey through the ship's quarters, immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of her storied past, surrounded by artifacts that sailed with her across the globe.

Experience the world’s largest collection of Merchant Navy ship figureheads. From heroic to whimsical, these figureheads, including depictions of historical figures like Florence Nightingale and political icons such as Benjamin Disraeli, offer a fascinating glimpse into maritime lore.

As you wander the decks, lively costumed actors bring the ship's vibrant history to life. Engage with characters like the stalwart captain, the bustling cook, or even Nannie the Figurehead, each adding a personal touch to the tales of the Cutty Sark. Interactions with these characters make history feel immediate and thrilling.

Delve deeper into the ship's history with hands-on experiences. In the lower hold, touch and smell samples of the cargo that once filled the ship’s hull, from tea and wool to whisky. Engage with the past through a dynamic video presentation, test your skills with an interactive navigation game, or enhance your visit with the newly launched Cutty Sark app. This immersive experience aboard the Cutty Sark is a journey through the legacy of one of the most iconic ships ever to sail the seas.

Lifts offer access to all other areas of the ship, including the main deck as well as the Gallery beneath the ship.

Who Can Go

Infants aged 0-4 go free.
Downloadable audio guide commentary is available in English, German, Spanish, French and Italian.
For safety reasons, wheelchair spaces are limited to 3 visitors at any one time.
Cutty Sark is wheelchair accessible with lifts providing access to all levels of the ship. Some areas of the Main Deck are not wheelchair accessible, but virtual access is provided to these spaces.
As the original ship structure restricts the size of the lift on board, mobility scooters cannot be accommodated on board.
A number of our Visitor Assistants are trained to British Sign Language Level 1 standard. British Sign Language supported and subtitled film and touchscreens are available at selected points within the permanent galleries.
The Cutty Sark audio guide is available with British Sign Language.
Hearing loops are in place at both the admissions and retail desks. Unfortunately, it has not been possible to install a loop system inside Cutty Sark due to interference caused by the original wrought iron structure, but subtitles are included in all films with audio soundtrack.
Hearing dogs and assistance dogs are welcome across all sites.
Cutty Sark is a registered dementia friendly site.

What about Insurance?

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
