The Main Event

If you're interested in learning how to fly a drone, have your own machine and want to learn how to get the best out of it, this Drone Drone Pilot Training Experience is for you.

This is a one-to-one lesson with a qualified instructor covering aspects such as how drones fly and their aerodynamics, how they are controlled, their safe operation and basic law considerations. You'll be able to take to the skies with the drone and put your training into action!

If you're wanting to use your drone for filming and photography, feel free to ask your instructor any questions you have, they'd be happy to give advice and guidance.

Drone Pilot Training Experience - What happens on the day?

Pre-flight briefing - 20-30 mins for the 1 hour session, approx 45 mins for the 2 hour session.
Move to the flight training area - You'll call Air Traffic Control at Edinburgh Airport Control Tower (supervised by your instructor) to inform them that flying will be taking place (you'll be in Edinburgh's Class D airspace).
Any assembly of the drone required will be demonstrated and the customer will be familiarised with the controller.
There will be a final brief, refreshing the flying exercise and safety considerations.
You'll fly for around 20-25 minutes for the one hour trial lesson or 40-45 minutes for the two hour trial lesson. There will usually be a choice of different UAS to fly (in addition to your own, if you've brought one); you'll generally fly two different drones during the longer lesson, due to battery flight time typically being limited to around 20 minutes for each machine.

Important Bits

Important to Note

Drone flying is weather dependent – Rain other than light or intermittent drizzle, winds above 20mph or poor visibility will require the flight to be rescheduled.
Therefore lessons are usually booked for lunchtime or later so that customers have chance to call ahead in the morning and avoid a wasted trip if conditions are unsuitable.
Customers should be aware that lessons cannot be guaranteed to take place on any given date and time due to weather constraints.

Before the trial lesson

It is strongly recommended that customers complete the CAA’s ‘Drone and Model Aircraft’ free online training and associated test which will provide them with a Flyer ID - click here.
Note this is not essential to fly the smallest machine but it is a legal requirement for the bigger UAS. The test is in a very simple multiple-choice format and the CAA issue a free certificate on completion.

When

Available to book seven days a week, during daylight hours, all year round (subject to weather and instructor availability).

Validity

Your voucher is valid for 12 Months from the date of issue.

Please note you must have booked and taken your experience before the expiry date.

Who Can Go

Minimum age: 14
Under 18's must be accompanied by an adult.
Sunglasses and a hat/cap is recommended to help with the glare from the sky.
Please wear suitable clothing for the weather and time of year. Comfortable footwear should be worn.
Spectators are welcome to watch from the edge of the operating field.
There is space for up to three spectators in the transport vehicle between the Courtyard and the flying area, otherwise it is a short walk (about 300 metres) between the two venues.

What about Insurance?

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.

A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
