The Fan Dance is an iconic endurance event, steeped in over 60 years of UK Special Forces history. This thrilling challenge is the first major hurdle in Special Forces selection, demanding extreme physical and mental resilience. Participants face the daunting ascent of Pen y Fan, Wales' highest peak at 2,907 feet, before descending and tackling the notorious Jacob’s Ladder on the return leg. It’s a gruelling test designed to push you to your limits, making it a true rite of passage for only the toughest of adventurers.
For those who complete the course, the rewards are not only personal but come with tangible accolades. Finishers are honoured with a custom TSFE Fan Dance medal and certificate, while top male, female, and team participants are recognised with exclusive first-place prizes. This event is open to all levels, with categories ranging from Clean Fatigue (unweighted) to the more extreme Load Bearing (carrying up to 35 lbs), as well as special Masters & Grandmasters categories for those aged 50 and above.

You'll be able to compete in one of the following categories...
Clean Fatigue – This category involves completing the Fan Dance course without carrying any additional weight, except for mandatory kit items. It's a test of speed and endurance for all participants, including Masters and Grandmasters.
Load Bearing – Participants carry a minimum of either 25 lbs or 35 lbs, excluding food and fluids, simulating military selection conditions. It’s a tougher, more physically demanding challenge.
Masters & Grandmasters Load Bearing – Specifically for those aged 50+ (Masters) and 60+ (Grandmasters), this category requires carrying a minimum of 25 lbs, excluding food and fluids.
Loadstone Aptitude – A preparatory event requiring participants to carry a minimum of 45 lbs, plus a supplied mock weapon. This event is designed to test readiness for more advanced challenges.
This event runs twice a year, in summer and winter.

The centres contracted with us hold public liability insurance. We also hold contingency liability cover. You will not be liable for accidental damage to equipment, except where damage has been caused as a result of recklessness or wilful negligence.
A cancellation indemnity, subject to terms, is included with every voucher.
All you have to do is pay for the experience you wish to purchase and we’ll send a voucher and booking information to you or directly to the recipient, then you just need to check the info and book your experience.
What is a Fan Dance?
The Fan Dance is a challenging endurance event based on the UK Special Forces selection process. It involves a strenuous 24 km route up and over Pen y Fan, the highest peak in southern Britain. Participants must ascend the mountain, descend on the other side, then return over the notorious Jacob’s Ladder ascent. The Fan Dance tests both physical and mental strength, with categories for those carrying weighted packs (Load Bearing) and those without (Clean Fatigue).
Is there car parking at the events?
Yes, parking is available at all event locations. Specific details are provided in the joining instructions.
Do participants receive a medal at the end of the event?
Yes, all finishers receive a custom-designed medal along with a certificate of completion to commemorate their achievement.
Do participants need to bring their own boots and bergen?
Yes, participants must supply their own boots, rucksack/bergen, and the necessary kit for their category. It’s recommended to train with the equipment beforehand to ensure comfort and avoid injury. The joining instructions will include a packing list and mandatory kit details.
What type of training is recommended?
A mix of cardio, circuit training, and hiking with your kit is recommended to prepare. Sharing training tips and experiences with others can also be helpful for event preparation.
