FAQs

What facilities can you expect at the spa?

Most spas offer a wonderful range of relaxing amenities to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. While each spa might have its own special features, you can usually look forward to:

Swimming Pool – Often heated, perfect for both a refreshing swim or a relaxing dip.

Jacuzzi/Hot Tub – A cosy, bubbling spot to help you unwind.

Sauna – A dry heat room that helps cleanse and relax the body.

Steam Room – A warm, steamy room to open pores and soothe muscles.

Hydrotherapy Pool – A pool with jets to gently massage and relax you.

Relaxation Lounge – A serene space with comfy loungers where you can fully unwind.

Treatment Rooms – Private spaces for massages, facials, and other treatments.

Spa Café or Restaurant – Enjoy light bites, meals, or drinks to complete your spa day.

Foot Spas – Small baths for a relaxing foot soak before or after treatments.

Heated Loungers – Warm, soothing beds to ease muscle tension and promote relaxation.

Is it safe to go on a spa break if you're pregnant?

If you're pregnant, particularly in the first trimester, it's a good idea to avoid certain facilities like Jacuzzis, saunas, and some treatments such as aromatherapy or massages that target the abdomen. After 13 weeks, many facilities are safe to use, though it’s still best to skip stimulating treatments. Always consult your doctor before booking, and make sure your therapist is aware of your pregnancy so they can tailor the experience to be as safe and relaxing as possible.

What should you wear on a spa break?

For most of the day, you'll likely be in swimwear, robes, and slippers. In UK spas, swimwear is typically required in shared spaces like saunas or steam rooms. It’s a good idea to bring two swimsuits—one for swimming and one for treatments, so you can always have a dry one ready. During treatments, wear whatever feels comfortable, whether that’s swimwear, underwear, or nothing at all. Therapists ensure your modesty is covered with towels or blankets throughout the session, so you can fully relax.

Should you talk to your therapist during treatment?

It’s completely up to you! Some people like to chat, while others prefer to relax in silence. Don’t be shy if you need something adjusted—whether it’s the massage pressure, room temperature, or anything else that would make you more comfortable.

Can you bring your phone to the spa?

It’s best to leave your phone in the locker to keep the spa atmosphere peaceful and relaxing for everyone. If you need your phone, make sure it’s on silent, and avoid phone conversations in the spa areas or during treatments to maintain the calm environment.

When should you arrive for your spa day?

Plan to arrive 15-30 minutes early to check in, change into your robe and slippers, and relax before your treatment begins. This gives you time to fully unwind and enjoy the facilities without feeling rushed.

What if you have dietary requirements?

Most spas are happy to accommodate dietary needs like vegetarian, gluten-free, or allergies. Just let them know ahead of time when booking, so they can make sure to prepare the right options for your meals or snacks.

Can you go to the spa if you have health conditions?

If you have any health concerns, it’s important to consult your doctor before visiting the spa. Let the spa and therapist know about any health issues so they can adjust treatments to suit your needs and ensure your comfort and safety.

Do spas cater to groups like couples or friends?

Yes! Many spas offer special packages for couples or friends, and there are often options for prenatal treatments too. These group packages are a perfect way to share a relaxing experience with loved ones.

Can children or teenagers visit the spa?

Spa policies on children and teenagers vary. Some spas offer family-friendly treatments for teens, while others are adults-only to maintain a peaceful environment. Always check the spa’s policy before booking if you're planning to visit with younger guests.

How long can you use the spa facilities for?

This depends on your package, but most spa day packages allow you to enjoy the facilities for the entire day. Some spas offer half-day options or twilight spa evenings. Be sure to check the details of your booking to make the most of your time.

Can you upgrade your spa package?

Yes! With these vouchers, you have the flexibility to choose from a wide range of spa experiences across the UK. When redeeming your voucher, you can explore available options and many spas offer the ability to upgrade. This could mean adding extra treatments, opting for a more luxurious package, or extending your stay. The best part is that you can personalise your experience at the time of booking, ensuring it fits exactly what you’re looking for.

Body Polish

  • Each body polish session features its own unique elements, ensuring a truly personalised experience
  • Body polishes offer a host of benefits including exfoliation, improved circulation, and a radiant appearance
  • A popular spa treatment offering complete relaxation and rejuvenation
  • Available at numerous locations nationwide

Body Polish

If you're looking for a revitalising spa treatment that leaves your skin glowing, refreshed, and smooth, look no further than a body polish. Ideal for those seeking a bit of pampering, detox, or to prepare your skin for a special occasion, a body polish is a must-try experience for anyone looking to feel their best.

What is a Body Polish Treatment?

A body polish is a luxurious spa treatment that gently exfoliates the skin to remove dead cells, dirt, and impurities, leaving your skin feeling silky-smooth and revitalised. The details and purpose of a body polish vary between spas and treatments, offering a truly personalised experience, though this essentially involves the application of a scrub or polish made from natural ingredients such as sugar, salt, or coffee.

The treatment is designed to stimulate blood circulation, and enhance the absorption of moisturising products for a fresh and glowing complexion.

What are the benefits of a Body Polish?

There are countless reasons to choose a body polish as your next spa treatment, with many benefits including but not limited to:

  • Exfoliation: A body polish removes the buildup of dead skin cells, revealing fresh, radiant skin underneath. This gentle exfoliation helps improve the texture and tone of your skin, leaving it smooth and supple.
  • Improved Circulation: The massaging action involved in a body polish encourages blood flow to the skin, promoting healthier, more youthful-looking skin.
  • Deep Hydration: Body polishes may be enriched with oils such as coconut, almond, or jojoba, to hydrate and nourish the skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth, and deeply moisturised.
  • Fake Tan Preparation / Removal:  Exfoliating and smoothing the skin, a body polish helps to ensure an even and long-lasting tan, while also helping to remove any old tan for a fresh, flawless finish.
  • Glow and Radiance: The combination of exfoliation and aftercare moisturisation helps your skin look more vibrant and radiant.

Types of Body Polish treatments

One of the best things about a body polish is that it can be customised to meet your skin’s specific needs. The types offered will also depend on the destination of your spa visit - whether you’re seeking a soothing, calming experience or something more energising and invigorating, most body polishes tend to fall into one of the below categories:

  • Salt Scrubs: Ideal for those with dry skin, salt scrubs exfoliate deeply and are may be infused with essential oils, like lavender or eucalyptus, for added relaxation.
  • Sugar Scrubs: Sugar is a gentler option for those with sensitive skin and is perfect for giving the skin a soft, smooth texture without irritation. Many sugar polishes come in sweet, fruity scents like citrus or berry, leaving your skin smelling delightful.
  • Coffee Scrubs: For those seeking an energising treatment, coffee-based scrubs are packed with antioxidants and caffeine, which can help firm and tone the skin while reducing the appearance of cellulite.
  • Herbal or Floral Polishes: For a truly indulgent experience, some body polishes are enriched with botanicals like rose petals or chamomile, providing a soothing and aromatic experience while treating the skin to nourishing hydration.

Whatever your skin type or preferences, a body polish can be tailored to suit you, ensuring that your treatment is as effective and enjoyable as possible.

What to expect

While the body polish provides incredible physical benefits, it also serves as a deeply relaxing experience. The gentle exfoliation, soothing oils, and expert massage create a calming atmosphere that allows you to unwind fully and forget the stresses of everyday life.

Many spas also incorporate calming music, soft lighting, and a tranquil setting to further enhance the relaxing atmosphere, creating a blissful experience from start to finish.

As with all spa treatments, the process often varies between spas and is tailored to suit your needs and levels of comfort. Most treatments generally tend to include the following steps:

  • Dress / Undress: At the start of your treatment, your therapist will guide you to the treatment room and leave you for a few moments to prepare and settle comfortably on the treatment bed.
  • Pre-polish Prep: The treatment usually begins with prepping your skin for the polish, where the therapist may gently cleanse your skin and help you relax into the experience.
  • Scrub: The therapist will then apply a scrub to your skin, massaging it in to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. This step is repeated on all areas included in the treatment.
  • Additional Features: Some body polishes include additional treatments, such as a soothing scalp massage, to further enhance relaxation and complete the sensory experience.
  • Cleanse: After the scrub, you’ll either be invited into a shower or your therapist will carefully cleanse your skin to remove the polish for you.
  • Moisturise & Aftercare: The treatment often concludes with a nourishing moisturiser or oil being applied to your skin. Alternatively, the oils from the scrub may have already provided ample hydration, leaving your skin soft and smooth.

For a body polish you usually wear swimwear - If the treatment includes your back, women may be asked to remove bikini tops.

When it comes to luxurious spa treatments that rejuvenate both body and mind, body wraps are a standout choice. Whether you’re seeking to detox, hydrate, or simply pamper yourself, a body wrap offers an unparalleled experience of indulgence and care.

What is a Body Wrap?

A body wrap is a spa treatment designed to enhance your skin’s health and overall well-being. The details and purpose of a body wrap vary between spas and treatments, each incorporating their own unique elements to create a truly personalised experience, but the process usually involves applying a mask or treatment like seaweed, mud, or clay to your body, followed by wrapping it in a warm cocoon of cloth, foil, or towels.

Types of Body Wrap treatments

Body wraps come in a delightful array of options, each tailored to your own specific goals and preferences. The types offered will also depend on the destination of your spa visit but most body wraps fall into one of the below broad categories:

  • Detoxifying Wraps: Featuring ingredients like mud, clay, or seaweed, these wraps draw out toxins and excess water, helping to reduce bloating and promote a sense of lightness.
  • Hydrating Wraps: Using rich moisturisers and oils, these wraps drench your skin in hydration, leaving it soft, smooth, and rejuvenated.
  • Slimming Wraps: Designed to firm and tone the skin, slimming wraps often include caffeine or herbal extracts to target problem areas and enhance the appearance of your body’s contours.
  • Relaxation Wraps: Incorporating calming ingredients like lavender, chamomile, or rose, these wraps are perfect for soothing both body and mind.

What to expect

One of the most appealing aspects of a body wrap is the luxurious environment in which it’s performed. Picture yourself in a serene spa setting, surrounded by soft lighting, calming music, and a soothing aroma of essential oils. As you recline on a heated bed, your therapist will apply the wrap with expert care, ensuring your comfort throughout the process.

As with all spa treatments, the process often varies between spas and is tailored to suit your needs and levels of comfort. Most treatments generally tend to include the following steps:

  • Dress/Undress: At the start of your treatment, your therapist will guide you to the treatment room and leave you for a few moments to prepare and settle comfortably under a towel provided on the treatment bed.
  • Pre-Wrap Prep: Many body wrap sessions include additional treatments, which prepares your skin to absorb the wrap’s benefits more effectively. This step also helps you ease into the relaxation process.
  • Rinse: Many treatment rooms are equipped with showers, allowing you to rinse off the pre-wrap treatment yourself at your own pace. Alternatively, your therapist may gently remove this using warm, damp towels or a gentle shower head.
  • Body Wrap: The highlight of the treatment, a luxurious body mask is applied before you’re wrapped to allow the products to deeply penetrate and work their magic.
  • Relaxation Time: Once wrapped, you’ll be given time to unwind and enjoy the tranquil environment. Soft music and candles may enhance the experience, and some spas combine body wraps with massages or facials, giving you an all-encompassing wellness experience.
  • Unwrap and Cleanse: When it’s time to remove the wrap, you’ll either be invited to shower again or your therapist will carefully cleanse your skin.
  • Aftercare: The treatment often concludes with an application of some form of aftercare, like moisturiser or body oil, leaving your skin feeling hydrated, refreshed, and glowing as you head out feeling completely revitalised.

For a body wrap, paper underwear is usually provided as not to get any products on your clothes, however,  you can usually choose to wear swimwear or your underwear for the treatment if you would prefer. If the treatment includes your back, women may be asked to remove bikini tops / bras.

Deep Tissue Spa Treatment

Deep Tissue Massage

  • Each deep tissue massage offers its own unique elements, ensuring a truly personalised experience
  • A particular favourite of athletes and gym-goers, a deep tissue massage helps to ease sore or stiff muscles
  • One of the most popular treatment on any spa’s menu, a deep tissue massage offers a wide range of benefits for both the body and mind
  • Available at numerous locations nationwide

Deep Tissue Massage

Known for its ability to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue, the deep tissue massage technique provides relief from muscle tension, stress, and chronic pain.

Whether you’ve been dealing with tight muscles from exercise, sitting at a desk for hours, or just need to unwind, a deep tissue massage offers the perfect balance of relaxation and therapeutic relief.

What is a Deep Tissue Massage?

A deep tissue massage is a therapeutic massage technique that uses slow, firm pressure to target the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

While it can be intense, the benefits are immediate and long-lasting, leaving you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and more flexible.

What are the benefits of a Deep Tissue Massage?

  • Relieves Muscle Tension: One of the primary reasons people opt for a deep tissue massage is its ability to relieve muscle tension. Whether you’ve been working hard at the gym, suffering from back pain, or simply feel tight after a long week, a deep tissue massage helps release tension and restore flexibility.
  • Reduces Stress: The deep, deliberate strokes used in this treatment not only relax the muscles but also have a calming effect on the nervous system. This helps to reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a sense of mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Improves Circulation: The pressure applied during the massage increases blood flow, which can help deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles and tissues. This can aid in recovery from physical exertion and help the body flush out toxins.
  • Alleviates Chronic Pain: Deep tissue massage can help those suffering from chronic pain, such as lower back pain, neck stiffness, or tension headaches. By targeting specific muscle groups, it can help reduce pain and improve movement.
  • Promotes Better Posture: Tight muscles often contribute to poor posture. By releasing muscle tension and improving flexibility, a deep tissue massage can help restore proper alignment and encourage better posture.

Is it painful?

A deep tissue massage is a more focused and intense massage technique designed to relieve muscle tension. While it may feel slightly uncomfortable in areas where muscles are tight, it should never be painful. Some mild stiffness may be felt after the massage, but this is temporary and will ease quickly.

What to expect

  • Dress/Undress: When you arrive for your deep tissue massage, your therapist will usually begin by discussing your problem areas and any areas of tension or pain you’d like to focus on. This ensures that the massage is tailored to your specific needs.
  • Massage Prep: Your therapist will leave you for a few moments to prepare and settle comfortably under a towel provided on the treatment bed.
  • Initial Relaxation: While deep tissue massage is more focused on technique than products, oils are generally used to lubricate the skin.
  • Deep Tissue Massage: The therapist will begin the massage, using various techniques such as kneading, friction, or tapping to break up muscle knots and adhesions in the areas of the body included in the treatment.
  • Post-Treatment Care: After your deep tissue massage, it’s important to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins and support the healing process. You might feel relaxed, but also slightly sore in the days following, which is normal.

For a deep tissue massage you can usually choose to wear swimwear or your underwear for the treatment itself. If the treatment includes your back, women may be asked to remove bikini tops / bras.

Facial Spa Treatment

Facial

  • Each facial session is especially tailored to your skin's needs for a truly personalised experience
  • Facials offer a wide range of benefits including hydration, exfoliation, and brightening
  • A classic spa treatment offering
  • Available at numerous locations nationwide

Facial

A facial is the ultimate spa treatment for anyone looking to refresh and revitalise their skin. Whether you’re preparing for a special occasion or simply indulging in some well-deserved self-care, a facial offers the perfect opportunity to pamper your skin while also enjoying a moment of relaxation.

What is a Facial?

A facial is a specialised skin treatment designed to cleanse, exfoliate, and nourish the skin on your face, leaving it feeling refreshed and looking radiant. The details and purpose of a facial vary between spas and treatments, though they typically involve a combination of cleansing, exfoliation, hydration, and a mask, all tailored to your skin’s individual needs.

What are the benefits of a Facial?

A facial is more than just a skin treatment, it’s a classic self-care experience that offers a wide range of benefits for both your skin and overall wellbeing:

  • Deep Cleansing: One of the main benefits of a facial is the deep cleansing of your skin. It removes dirt, oil, and impurities that accumulate throughout the day, which helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts. This leaves your skin feeling fresh and rejuvenated.
  • Exfoliation: Exfoliating the skin removes dead skin cells that can make your complexion appear dull and uneven. By sloughing away these cells, a facial helps reveal a smoother, brighter, and more youthful-looking complexion.
  • Hydration: Facials provide much-needed hydration to your skin, helping it stay soft, plump, and healthy. This is especially beneficial for dry or dehydrated skin, as moisturising masks and serums restore moisture and lock it in, promoting a nourished and glowing appearance.
  • Anti-Ageing: Many facials include treatments that target the visible signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles. Products rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and peptides can stimulate collagen production, improving skin elasticity and giving you a more youthful look.
  • Relaxation and Stress Relief: Facials are not just good for your skin—they’re also incredibly relaxing. The soothing massage, calming scents, and quiet environment help to alleviate stress, leaving you feeling rejuvenated both inside and out.

Types of Facial treatments

There are a variety of facials to choose from, depending on your skin’s unique needs. The types offered will also depend on the destination of your spa visit but most facials fall into one of the below broad categories:

  • Classic Facial: This is a traditional, well-rounded facial that usually includes cleansing, exfoliating, toning, and moisturising. It's perfect for anyone looking for a general refresh and is suitable for most skin types.
  • Anti-Ageing Facial: Specially formulated to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, this facial typically uses products that promote collagen production and help improve skin texture and elasticity.
  • Hydrating Facial: Ideal for those with dry or dehydrated skin, this facial generally includes a deeply hydrating mask or serum to replenish moisture and restore your skin’s natural radiance.
  • Brightening Facial: If you’re looking to combat dull or uneven skin tone, a brightening facial can help by exfoliating and may use ingredients like vitamin C to promote a radiant, glowing complexion.
  • Acne Facial: Designed to target oily, blemish-prone skin, this facial focuses on deep cleansing and extraction to reduce breakouts, as well as applying anti-inflammatory treatments to soothe irritated skin.
  • Luxury or Spa Facial: For those wanting to indulge, a luxury facial offers an elevated experience that often includes the use of advanced treatments like LED light therapy, oxygen infusion, or high-quality serums and masks, often paired with a relaxing massage.

What to expect

As with all spa treatments, the process often varies between spas and is tailored to suit your skin needs and goals. Most treatments generally tend to include the following steps:

  • Consultation: Before starting your facial, the therapist will usually ask you about your skin type and any specific concerns you have, such as dryness, breakouts, or signs of ageing. This allows them to customise the treatment to best suit your needs.
  • Cleansing: The treatment begins with a thorough cleanse to remove makeup, dirt, and oils from your skin, leaving it fresh and prepared for the following steps.
  • Exfoliation: A gentle exfoliant is applied to slough away dead skin cells, giving your complexion a smooth and radiant appearance.
  • Mask: A soothing mask is applied, tailored to your skin type. This could be a hydrating, detoxifying, or anti-ageing mask, depending on your needs. You’ll be able to relax while the mask works its magic.
  • Additional Features: Many facials include additional features, such as a relaxing facial massage or extractions. This adds an extra layer of relaxation, making the experience feel like a true pampering session.
  • Finishing Touches: To complete the facial, your therapist will apply a moisturiser, toner, or serum to lock in the benefits of the treatment, leaving your skin glowing and nourished.

Depending on the treatment that you have, products may extend to your neck, decollete, and shoulders. Some facials may also include a head massage in which oils might be used in your hair. Depending on what your treatment includes, you can choose to stay in your normal clothes or wear a robe over your underwear or swimwear.

Head Massage Spa Treatment

Head Massage

  • Each head massage features its own unique elements, ensuring a truly personalised experience
  • Head massages offer a wide range of benefits including stress relief and improved circulation
  • A classic spa treatment offering complete relaxation and TLC
  • Available at numerous locations nationwide

Head Massage

A head massage is the perfect way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and indulge in pure relaxation. Whether you’re dealing with stress, tension, or just need a little pick me up, a head massage offers a soothing and effective solution. This spa treatment focuses on relieving tension in the scalp, neck, and shoulders, providing instant relief and a sense of calm. Whether performed as a stand alone treatment, or as part of a full body massage, a head massage is a wonderful way to rejuvenate both your mind and body.

What is a Head Massage?

A head massage is a therapeutic treatment that typically involves gentle pressure and kneading of the scalp, neck, and shoulders. It can be performed using a variety of techniques, though most tend to use a combination of strokes, kneading, friction and acupressure.

The treatment may also include the application of essential oils or hair serums to nourish the scalp and hair, providing added benefits.

What are the benefits of a Head Massage?

Head massages are not only incredibly relaxing, but they also come with a range of benefits that improve both physical and emotional wellbeing, including but not limited to:

  • Stress Relief: One of the main benefits of a head massage is its ability to reduce stress. The gentle pressure on the scalp stimulates the production of feel-good endorphins, helping to relax the mind and body. Whether you’re dealing with work-related stress or personal tensions, a head massage can work wonders to calm your nerves and improve your mood.
  • Alleviates Tension: Many people carry tension in their neck, shoulders, and scalp, especially after long hours at a desk or a stressful day. A head massage targets these areas, helping to release built-up tension and providing a deep sense of relief.
  • Improves Circulation: A head massage stimulates blood flow to the scalp, which can improve circulation and promote healthy hair growth. Increased circulation also helps oxygenate the cells, making your skin look fresher and more revitalised.
  • Promotes Mental Clarity: Head massages not only relax the body but also clear the mind. The act of focusing on the scalp and neck can help you release mental blocks, reduce anxiety, and improve focus and concentration.
  • Improves Sleep: The calming effects of a head massage can also promote better sleep. By reducing stress and muscle tension, the treatment helps you unwind, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy a restful night.

Types of Head Massage

There are many different types of head massages, each offering unique techniques and benefits. The types offered will also depend on the destination of your spa visit, though a few examples include:

  • Indian Head Massage: Originating from Ayurvedic traditions, an Indian head massage focuses on the scalp, neck, shoulders, and upper back. It’s an excellent option for relieving stress and tension, and it’s often performed without oils to provide a lighter touch. This massage is known for promoting mental clarity and improving energy levels.
  • Aromatherapy Head Massage: This treatment combines the calming effects of a head massage with the use of essential oils. Essential oils such as lavender, rosemary, and eucalyptus are applied to the scalp to enhance relaxation, relieve headaches, and nourish the hair. It’s perfect for those seeking a more indulgent and aromatic experience.
  • Shiatsu Head Massage: A Japanese technique, Shiatsu head massage uses finger pressure along specific energy points on the scalp and neck to release tension and balance the body’s energy flow. This method is deeply relaxing and can help with physical and emotional stress relief.
  • Scalp Treatment Massage: Often combined with hair care treatments, a scalp massage focuses on nourishing the scalp and promoting healthy hair growth. Using hair oils or serums, the therapist will gently massage the product into the scalp, improving circulation and leaving the hair feeling revitalised and soft.

What to expect

Throughout the treatment, the spa will usually provide a tranquil environment, often with soft music, calming scents, and dim lighting, helping to enhance your sense of relaxation and escape.

As with all spa treatments, the process often varies between spas and is tailored to suit your needs and levels of comfort. Most head massages generally tend to follow the following process:

  • Initial Consultation: Upon arrival at the spa, your therapist will likely ask you about any areas of tension or discomfort, as well as any preferences you may have for the treatment. This ensures that the massage is tailored to meet your specific needs.
  • Relaxation: You’ll be asked to sit or lie down comfortably on the treatment bed. The therapist will begin by gently massaging your scalp, using light to medium pressure, depending on your preferences. The treatment may also include a gentle neck and shoulder massage to target areas where tension is often held.
  • Essential Oils or Products: In many head massages, especially aromatherapy or scalp treatments, essential oils or specialised hair products are applied to nourish your scalp and hair. These products are gently massaged into the skin, enhancing the overall experience and leaving you feeling deeply relaxed.
  • Aftercare: After the massage, the therapist may provide advice on aftercare, such as how to maintain healthy scalp conditions or tips for relieving stress.

For a head massage, you can wear your ordinary clothes, or a robe if you are having this treatment as part of a spa day.

Hot Stone Spa Treatment

Hot Stone Massage

  • Each hot stone massage is tailored to ensure a truly personalised experience
  • Hot stone massages offer a wide range of benefits including detoxification, and stress relief
  • A popular spa treatment offering total relaxation for both the body and mind
  • Available at numerous locations nationwide

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is one of the most luxurious and therapeutic treatments you can indulge in at a spa. Combining the calming effects of massage with the soothing heat of smooth, heated stones, this treatment is the perfect way to relax both mind and body.

What is a Hot Stone Massage?

A hot stone massage involves the use of smooth, heated stones, typically made of basalt, a volcanic rock that retains heat well. These stones are placed on specific points of the body, such as the back, hands, or legs, and can also be used by the therapist to apply gentle pressure while performing a traditional massage. The heat from the stones helps to relax tight muscles and improve circulation, while the pressure applied by the therapist ensures deep muscle relaxation and stress relief.

What are the benefits of a Hot Stone Massage?

A hot stone massage offers a diverse range of benefits for both the body and mind, including but not limited to:

  • Muscle Relaxation: The heat from the stones can help to loosen tight muscles, making the massage more effective in relieving tension. Whether you have knots from sitting at a desk all day or sore muscles from exercise, the heat works to ease stiffness and promote deep relaxation.
  • Stress Relief: One of the most noticeable benefits of a hot stone massage is its ability to reduce stress. The soothing warmth of the stones combined with the gentle pressure of the massage helps to calm the mind, reduce anxiety, and promote an overall sense of wellbeing. It’s perfect for unwinding after a hectic day or week.
  • Improved Circulation: The heat from the stones promotes blood flow, which helps to improve circulation throughout the body. This increased blood flow can lead to better oxygen delivery to the muscles, helping to reduce muscle fatigue and improve overall skin tone.
  • Detoxification: Hot stone massages can also help with detoxification by stimulating the lymphatic system. As the stones warm up the body, toxins are encouraged to move out of tissues, which helps with the natural detox process and leaves you feeling refreshed.
  • Pain Relief: The combination of heat and massage can also offer relief from chronic pain conditions. The soothing heat helps to reduce inflammation and relax sore muscles, providing long-lasting comfort.

Types of Hot Stone Massage

The types offered will also depend on the destination of your spa visit, the specific techniques used, and the areas of the body being targeted. Most hot stone massages tend to fall under one of the below categories:

  • Traditional Hot Stone Massage: This is the classic hot stone treatment where smooth, heated stones are placed on the body to promote relaxation. The therapist may also use the stones to apply pressure in areas of tension. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to relieve general muscle tension and stress.
  • Deep Tissue Hot Stone Massage: If you have particularly tight muscles or chronic pain, a deep tissue hot stone massage may be the right choice for you. The therapist uses deeper pressure with the stones to work through tight muscles and stubborn knots, helping to alleviate deep-seated tension and discomfort.
  • Aromatherapy Hot Stone Massage: For an added layer of relaxation, an aromatherapy hot stone massage combines the soothing heat of the stones with the therapeutic benefits of essential oils. The oils are carefully chosen based on your needs, whether it’s lavender for stress relief, or eucalyptus for a revitalising boost. This treatment is ideal for those looking to enhance their relaxation experience with calming scents.

What to expect

As with all spa treatments, the process often varies between spas and is tailored to suit your needs and levels of comfort. Most treatments generally tend to include the following steps:

  • Consultation: Upon arrival, your therapist will discuss any specific areas of tension or discomfort you may be experiencing. They may also ask about your preferred level of pressure and whether you have any contraindications, ensuring that the treatment is tailored to your needs.
  • Massage Prep: The therapist will leave you for a few moments to prepare and settle comfortably under a towel provided on the treatment bed.
  • Massage Techniques: The therapist will place the smooth, heated stones on key points of your body. The heat will be just the right temperature, allowing you to relax and enjoy the soothing sensation. The stones will then be used to apply gentle pressure to your muscles. You’ll feel a comforting warmth as the stones work their magic, easing tight muscles and promoting relaxation. The therapist may also use their hands to massage any areas of tension, ensuring a thorough treatment.
  • Aftercare: After your hot stone massage, your therapist may offer advice on aftercare, such as drinking plenty of water to aid in detoxification or stretching to maintain muscle flexibility.

For a hot stone massage, you can usually choose to wear swimwear or your underwear for the treatment if you would prefer. The treatment usually includes your back, so women may be asked to remove bikini tops / bras.
