In 2007, Benjamin Mee shared the tale of Dartmoor Zoo in his best-selling book, "We Bought a Zoo," which has since been translated into over 20 languages and sold worldwide.
Hollywood took notice of this captivating story in 2009, leading to the 2010 release of a film adaptation starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson. The movie premiered in the USA and reached UK audiences in March 2012. While the film was set in California to appeal to an American audience, the Oscar-winning writer/director Cameron Crowe stayed true to the essence of Mee's original narrative.

While nearly all of the zoo is accessible to wheelchairs and buggies, it is quite hilly and rugged and some of the paths are challenging. Caution should be exercised, and the team is ready to help when you need: just ask.
It's is recommended to wear suitable footwear as the site has uneven pathways, gravel, and hills.
