Explore Westminster Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and England’s premier church which is the site of every royal coronation since 1066, beginning with William the Conqueror. The current Gothic structure was commissioned by Henry III in the 13th century, who had Edward the Confessor’s royal palace and the existing monastery demolished. The new cathedral was consecrated in 1269. By royal decree, Westminster Abbey has since been designated as the ceremonial site for the coronation and burial of English monarchs.
Royal Tombs
Westminster Abbey is the final resting place of over 3,000 people, including 30 monarchs and luminaries like Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Stephen Hawking, and Geoffrey Chaucer. The Unknown Warrior’s grave is at the west end of the Nave, brought from France in 1920.
The Coronation Chair
In St George’s Chapel, the Coronation Chair, commissioned by Edward I, has been used for every coronation since the 13th century. Originally adorned with gold leaf and glass, it was designed to hold the ‘Stone of Destiny’ taken by Edward I.
Explore the Lady Chapel & Chapter House
The Lady Chapel features a fan-vaulted ceiling and elaborate decorations and is the burial site of 15 royals, including Elizabeth I and Mary Queen of Scots. The Chapter House, with its late Saxon door dating back to the 1050s, was an early meeting place for the King’s Great Council and the Commons, precursors to Parliament.
